June Team Member Spotlight: Mary Coleman

Mary ColemanHow long have you been working at TopSpot, and what do you do here?

Believe it or not, I celebrated my 8-year anniversary on June 4th of this year! I started at TopSpot managing both SEO and PPC campaigns. I was then promoted to a Team Lead in 2011 and now I am a Senior Team Lead. I love working with my team, and other Customer Relationship Teams to develop and execute effective, integrated marketing campaigns for our clients.

How has TopSpot helped you in your career development?

I started working at TopSpot a week after I graduated college, and was the youngest team member in the entire company, so it is safe to say that TopSpot has helped my career development a whole lot!

Throughout my time at TopSpot, and with the help of my team members, I’ve developed my own skills in this industry and have learned how to pass this knowledge on to others.”

I’ve also grown to be much more comfortable getting on the phone with someone or speaking in front of a group of people. I think this has to do with being confident in the knowledge I have gained over the last 8 years thanks to the skills I’ve acquired while working at TopSpot.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Football has been (and still is) a huge part of my life since I was 10 years old. I grew up in Connecticut, so my family and I are die hard New England Patriots fans. When I was a kid, I thought I was going to move to Boston and work for the Patriots organization. I had no idea what I’d be doing there, but I dreamed of combining my career with my passion for football.

What do you enjoy doing on your days off?

I’ve lived in Houston for about 8 years and my husband has lived here for 5, so we love exploring Houston…and Houston food! Our favorite place to take our three kids to eat is Star Pizza for their deep dish pizza and Bullpen Pizza for their hot wings. We also enjoy going to Galveston Island. We recently took a boat tour around Galveston and we were surprised by what was there right off the coast. Did you know that there’s an old war ship made of concrete a few miles off the coast that the US military intentionally sunk when it was decommissioned?

I’m a huge car enthusiast. I drive a “slightly” modified 2013 Dodge Charger R/T. I’m especially proud of my car because my husband and I installed some of the modifications ourselves. I’m a member of Spacecity LX, a Houston-based Mopar Car Club. I go to car meets, races and events all over Texas. The biggest car meet I’ve attended to date was We Are Mopar in Dallas, Texas. There were over 1,000 cars in attendance!

I also love photography. I took a class in college and some of my work was included in a school-wide showcase. Since that class I’ve been hooked. I’ve done family photoshoots, engagement photos for friends and my own son’s newborn photos (see below). I get my creativity fix from getting behind a lens, finding the perfect natural light and capturing the best angles.

What is your favorite part about working for TopSpot?

I absolutely love when I get to be a part of training new team members. Seeing people learn new skills and using them in their daily work gives me a huge sense of accomplishment. I’m like a proud mom every time I see someone I’ve trained get recognition for their work. I also enjoy the challenge of getting an understanding of a person’s learning style and modifying my training style to complement them. I’ve grown and learned as much as the people I’m training do.

What advice would you give to our newer team members?

Be on the lookout for learning opportunities; they are everywhere. As you grow your skillset here at TopSpot, you will begin to find youself in situations where you are the ‘expert in the room’. Even if this is case, be sure to try and learn something new. Your managers, of course, are tasked with your professional development, but you can learn from anyone you come across, whether it be another new team member, a more seasoned team member, or a client of ours that you work with.
